the building:
The parish church is the second oldest religious
building on the island. It was constructed around 1200 by Danish monks –
who introduced the church’s brickwork technique – probably on an older
Slav burial ground as is indicated by the walled-in “Swantewit Stone“.
The apse and the square choir are still preserved in their original
Romanesque style. In the late Gothic period, the choir was given a
ribbed vault. Ornamental wall paintings from the early 13th century were
later reconstructed and are – alongside the Romanesque font of Gotland
limestone – the oldest features of the church. The church was originally
conceived as as three-aisle transeptless pier basilica, but these plans
were obviously changed in the course of the building works. Particularly
interesting features of the church include the large crucifix in the
triumphal arch (14th century), the altar (1724) and the baptismal angel
created by Elias Keßler in 1730. A copy of the painting "Christ Saves
Peter Sinking at Sea" by P. O. Runge is hanging in the aisle. |
