Kaland House
the building:
An establishment of the Kaland Brethren (Fratres Calendarii) was
mentioned as early as 1455. The present building dates from about 1481.
After dissolution of the confraternity in 1532, the building passed into
the ownership of the city of Lüneburg and for centuries was the
residence of the rector of the Johanneum. In layout and structure, the
building resembles a Gothic hall house with a high hall on the
groundfloor and a centrally located pointed arch entrance. surmounted by
three niches. Two coats-of-arms, state and city, adorn the corners of
the building under a glazed foliage frieze. The seven-part gable is
richly ornamented with cable moulding. The front gable was reconstructed
in 1896 on an old model.
