Lüneburg City Hall is one of the most architecturally interesting and important city halls in the whole of Northern Germany. Parts of the building were constructed in the 13th century. Architecture and interior design mirror the political development and economic importance of the town. The city hall in its present state actually consists of several buildings constructed at different periods around the building’s high medieval core, the Cloth Hall (first half of the 13th century), which today houses the city treasury (an exhibition can be visited on the 2nd floor). First to follow was the adjacent court room (constructed towards the end of the 13th century) which was later redecorated (the windows are from around 1410, and the wall paintings were created during the Renaissance period). The small Mayoral Election Chamber with its unique wooden panels has windows from the late 15th century. In the middle of the 15th century, the town council commissioned the construction of the large Princes’ Hall, intended as a ball room and profusely decorated with paintings of the princes from the house of Brunswick-Lüneburg and huge three-armed candelabra. The Great Council Chamber with its rich carvings and paintings was created in the second half of the 16th century.

City Hall, Old Chancerllery



the building:
Accessible from the courtroom in the city hall and adjoining the cloth hall lies the chancellery, where council lawyers and clerks sat at their work. The walls and ceilings are decorated with tendril ornamentation. The surviving original furniture includes wall cupboards for storing documents. The room is divided into two by a partition with a large wrought-iron grille. Light enters through south-facing windows, and a fireplace provided heating. In the back room the outline of desks can be seen against the supports between the south-wall windows. A Baroque lantern hanging from a ceiling joist in the front room contains the bones of the sow that discovered the salt deposits which brought prosperity to Lüneburg.

City Hall, The mayoral election Chamber



the building:
The mayoral election chamber, completed in 1491, is reached along a long, narrow corridor off the city hall courtroom. Behind its three doors the mayors of the city were presumably elected. The south wall is occupied by a rounded arched window. Glass windows separated by richly profiled wooden posts contain four full-length portraits of mayors in their rich regalia. They were in power in the year when the chamber was built. The walls, ceiling, and floor of the room are of fir wood. Lockable settles with high footstools surround the room. The panelling is structured by painted frame members. The wall panels are crowned by round arches with tracery and foliage underlaid with red and blue. A coloured frieze of fantastical figures tops the wall ornamentation: lions, a fire-breathing monster, an elephant, a unicorn, a dragon. The walls accommodate numerous cupboards, pigeon-holes, and niches for storing files. A washbasin in a niche allowed staff to wash their hands. A large fireplace heated the room. The late 15th century aspect of the room has been preserved almost unchanged.

City Hall, Princes' Hall



the building:
In the mid-15th century the city council extended the city hall, added the princes hall above the cloth hall and the chancellery, and jutting somewhat into the courtroom. Originally, this 34-metre-long, 10-metre wide, and 5-metre-high hall bore the name “danzhus” or ballroom. This is where council balls were held, where delegations from the Hanseatic cities were received, and where council and citizenry paid homage to the ruling prince. The hall owes its present name to the 1482 tempera portraits on canvas of princely couples from the House of Brunswick-Lüneburg which superseded murals, a few of which have survived. Daniel Frese reworked the paintings in 1607 and adorned the ceiling with 150 portraits of Roman and German emperors and kings. On the main beam carrying the entire ceiling, which is suspended from the rooftruss, Daniel Frese reproduced the coats-of-arms and names of the members of the 1607 Lüneburg city council. Traces of the Gothic tendril ornamentation with half-figures on a red ground have been preserved unter this painting. Three-armed wall candelabra lighted the hall. Five of originally six Gothic chandeliers with mighty stag and reindeer antlers are suspeded from the beam. City Hall, Courtroom



the building:
The courtroom is the oldest surviving inside room in the city hall. From about 1330 it was used principally for winter sessions of the council. The room is provided with hot-air heating. The council benches, uniting elements from many centuries, are flanked by a 1497 perron with a depiction of a popular medieval game and the city coat of arms. The south wall contains the impressive, stained-glass Nine Heroes Window. Created in 1410, it shows the nine good heroes of the Middle Ages. On the opposite wall there is a monumental panel painting dating from between 1480 and 1495. Christ as Judge of the World is flanked by Mary and John the Baptist, the patron saint of the principal Lüneburg church. Three cupboards are built into the west wall on which the council displayed its wealth of silver. Two date from the late 15th century, the third from 1521. The decoration of the wooden vat and walls dates from 1529. The floor of formerly glazed ceramic tiling and plaster screed elements decorated with lions and quatrefoils has an astonishingly plastic effect.
