the building:
With its height of 37 m, the central nave of the St.
Nicholas’ Church is the fourth highest in the whole of Germany. The
construction of the present church building started in the 14th century.
The tower was originally crowned by a slender ridge turret which was
destroyed in 1703 by a heavy storm. The collapsing tower also destroyed
large parts of the original church interior which were then replaced by
contemporary (i.e. Baroque) ornaments. St. Nicholas’ was the church of
the sailors and travelling tradesmen. It was also the only of the town’s
three large parish churches (St. Mary’s, St. George’s, St. Nicholas’) to
survive WWII almost unscathed.
