Contact: City Wall: Am Knieperwall and Fährwall Knieper Gate: Knieperstr. 10 Küter Gate: Am Kütertor www.stralsundtourismus.de Guided Tours: German, English ( there are no guided tours inside the gates) the building: Compared with other medieval cities, Stralsund has retained large sections of its wall. In the 13th century the defensive enceinte was still constructed of wooden stakes. In the course of the 14th century. It was gradually replaced by a stone wall with towers and wall walks . The stretch of the city wall between the former Hospital Gate and the still extant Küter Gate was extensively restored during the 1960s. The wall walks and watch towers have also been conserved. Of the eleven original gates, five land gates and six water gates, two have survived: the Knieper Gate, mentioned as early as 1293, and which is now an original home, and the Küter Gate from 1446, now a youth hostel. |
