the building:
The building at 38 Mönchstraße with its simple gable is
one of the oldest in the city. It was erected in 1320 as a merchant’s
house. Surviving elements from the preceding structure go back to the
years just after 1300. The two projections, which extend beyond the
building line, bay windows referred to as “Utluchten,” date in their
present form from the 18th century. After far-reaching restoration, the
house is now used by the Cultural History Museum. Visitors can learn
about the typical modes of construction of historical buildings in the
city.
The restoration process connected with extraordinary effort was
financed by the German Foundation for Monument Protection
(www.denkmalschutz.de).
