the building:
Towards the middle of the 14th century, the long,
narrow, two-storey brick building was erected southeast of St. Nicolas’
Church as part of the churchyard surround. It housed the sexton and St.
Nicolas’ Latin School. In the Baltic region it is the most important
example of this type of school to have survived, where merchants’ sons
acquired the rudiments of trading skills. The valuable medieval
structure was carefully restored in 1994/95. Particularly worth seeing
is the northern narrow side of the building with the pilaster
gable.Today the school hosts the vicarage and parish office.
