the building:
The core of the City Scales building on the former
Hafenmarkt, today part of the Wasserstraße, goes back to the Middle
Ages. The City Scales provided official control of weights and measures.
It was first mentioned in 1279. Today it is the last surviving example
of its kind in the Baltic cities. After many alterations and severe war
damage, the two-storey building was restored to its original state in
1991 and 1992. The City Scales now houses the municipal children’s
library.
