Contact: Fährstr. 23/24 18439 Stralsund www.stralsundtourismus.de the building: The late Renaissance gabled house, number 23 – which bears the name of the discoverer of oxygen, the chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele, who was born there. – was built in the 14th century as a “Dielenhaus” or “hall house,” being altered in the 17th and again in the 19th centuries. In the early 1980s the façade was restored to its 17th century state. Like the neighbouring house, the two-storey gabled house at 24 Fährstraße was rehabilitated in the early 1980s. The entire lower area was given its original form as a medieval “Dielenhaus,” whereas 17th and 19th centuries changes to the gable were conserved. In 1983, two medieval perron stones were placed in front of the portal. The Scheele House is now a home to culture, accommodating the Department of Culture and the Cultural Association, and a popular venue for events. |
