the building:
St. Catherine’s Abbey was established by the Dominicans in 1251. The founder was Prince Joromar II of Rügen. The almost intact complex is among the largest of its kind in North Germany. After the Reformation the abbey was secularized and served various purposes, such as an orphanage and grammar school. Following comprehensive restoration between 1921 and 1924, it become the home of the Provincial Museum for New West Pomerania and Rügen. The refectory is one of the most impressive Gothic interiors in North Germany. Because of it architectural beauty and outstanding acoustics, it is a prized venue for concerts. Immediately after the Reformation, the abbey church was converted into an arsenal, later an armoury, being subsequently used for a variety of purposes until 1973. In that year it was restored to its original state. However, a free-standing construction was inserted in the hall church, giving the German Oceanographic Museum greater scope in using the space for exhibitions. With its more than 50 rooms, the Abbey of St. Catherine now accommodates the Cultural History Museum and the German Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium.
