Together with the hospital in Lübeck, the Holy Spirit
Hospital in Stralsund is among the best preserved hospital complexes in
the southern Baltic region. The oldest part is the Church of the Holy
Spirit. It dates from the early 15th century. The small, four-bay hall
church has a rectangular termination and a Baroque altar dating from
about 1770. The church has both a west portal opening onto Wasserstraße
and an east portal, and two doors on the east tribune providing access
to a hall known as the “Kirchgang.” Composed of two parallel, two-storey
naves, it was built on to the church in 1645 to accommodate the sick,
the old, and people in need of care. At the eastern end, the hall is
separated from the rest of the hospital by a door. A gallery was built
into the Kirchgang in 1680, providing the model for the city hall
colonnade. The Church of the Holy Spirit was a garrison church up to
1945 and now serves as a parish church for the parish of St. James.
Apartments have been built into the restored Kirchgang.
