| The Apartment Block in the Hansaviertel,
Berlin 1955-1957 The modal apartment house was built in the Hansaviertal on the occasion of the Interbau Exhibition. The conventional small corridor-like balconies were here transformed into patios around which the rooms of the apartments were grouped. The grouping around the open-air room created an intimate, private atmosphere. |

The Hansaviertel is a quarter in the Tiergarten borough of Berlin. It was
almost completely destroyed during World War II, but it was rebuilt from
1957 to 1961 as a project of international master architects (Alvar
Aalto, Egon Eiermann, Walter Gropius, Oscar Niemeyer, etc.) called
"Interbau". The whole ensemble is now protected as a historic monument. The Hansaplatz is located at the center of the quarter. There you find a small shopping arcade, a subway station and also the Grips-Theater. Schloss Bellevue is nearby. |
